What are the dos and don’ts of nail care?
The condition of your nails reflects your general state of health, so looking after yourself by consuming a varied, vegetable-based diet, drinking lots of water and being physically active is where nail care begins.
Do
- Keep your nails clean, and moisturize the surrounding skin (cuticle) with a small amount of oil (almond, olive, avocado, etc) on a regular basis.
- Protect your nails from damage by wearing gloves for activities such as gardening and housecleaning, or any time you are handling chemicals.
- Trim your nails with manicure scissors or clippers, cut straight across and shape the nails as preferred by filing in one direction (don’t saw back and forth).
- Clip hangnails.
- Use a buffer, rather than nail polish, if you want your nails to shine.
- Use acetone-free polish removers.
Don’t
- Avoid biting your nails and chewing on the skin around them.
- Don’t bite or tear off hangnails.
- Don’t use harsh polishes or polish removers.
- Avoid digging out ingrown nails — see your doctor for treatment.
If you use a salon for manicures/pedicures, look for their health department license (it should be displayed) and ask about their hygiene practices. Use the services of licensed manicurists or estheticians. Remember that the use of false nails is associated with a greater risk of fungal infections and other nail health problems.
Also if you’re dealing with hair problems. Give them the nutrition they need.
